Introduction Setup Warnings
SMOS motor board includes rotating machine power transistors. Both reach temperatures enough cause burns! facilitate safe operation, 12-volt input power should come from laboratory power supply that current limited more than amps. user should aware that: Before moving scope probes, making connections, etc., generally advisable power down 12-volt supply. Standalone operation board should allowed only with insulative standoffs shown Figure 1-3. Wearing safety glasses, avoiding neckties jewelry, using shields, operation personnel trained power electronics techniques also advisable.

Setup Guide
Setup connections SMOS motor board straightforward. SMOS motor board connects Motorola embedded motion control series control board 40-pin ribbon cable. motor's power leads plug into output connectors FASTON type J8). Figure depicts completed setup with control board module. Follow these steps board read caution end:
Mount standoffs SMOS motor board locations indicated Figure 1-3. Step step optional when making connections control boards such DSP56F8xxEVM that placed flat bench next SMOS motor board. Plug 40-pin ribbon cable that supplied with Motorola embedded motion control series control boards into input connector located right-hand side motor board, considering `default front view' position Figure 1-2. other this cable links control board's 40-pin output connector. Mount control board standoffs with screws washers. This step optional with control boards. Connect 12-Vdc power supply either connector power jack JP4, labeled "Power 12V". Either one, both, used. These connectors located front left-hand corner board. 12-volt power supply should rated match motor current. Apply power SMOS motor board. green power-on lights when voltage supply present. Note that SMOS motor board powers control board, thus making only power supply necessary complete system.
CAUTION:
Since control board powered SMOS motor board, imperative that only power supply used!
Temperature, under-voltage over-voltage faults, externally sensed current overflow disables gate driver. Board reset needed. Either switch power supply turn switch position back, provide `soft reset'.
NOTE:
Check trimmer tagged Figure <2.45V (between bottom trimmer pin-2 GNDA) which thresholds current amps. closer value 1.65V, smaller bridge current that flow.

Overview
From systems point view, SMOS motor board fits into architecture that designed application development. addition hardware that needed motor, variety feedback signals that facilitate control algorithm development provided. SMOS motor board's power output stage complementary field effect transistor (MOSFET) 3-phase bridge that capable supplying sensing amps continuous current. Design Considerations Voltage Current Feedback Signals
output voltage shifted 1.65 into middle converter range, accommodate both positive negative current swings. ±300-mV voltage drop across shunt resistor corresponds measured current range amps (peak value), again with 3.3V maximum output. SMOS motor board measures limits current according reconstructed current value that inverts swings phase current signals also shifts output 1.65V with gain A=1. significance adjustable with trimmer, R131, used setting over-current comparator implemented SMOS driver. This comparator disables driver outputs when (the driver pin) voltage rises above IS+, Figure 5-2. This happens when following true:
VIS+off 0.08 ImaxDCB 1.65
CAUTION:
value, VIS+ 2.45V, disables over-current circuit protection functionality since value VIS- always smaller than 2.45 volts. Allowing larger VIS+ value lead permanent damage board current higher than amps applied! resetting board faults step section 1.5.

Back-EMF Signals
Back-EMF zero crossing signals included support sensorless algorithms brushless motors. Referring Figure 5-3, which shows circuitry phase phase voltage scaled down voltage divider consisting R216, R217, R221. output from this divider, BEMF_sense_C produces Back-EMF sense voltage. Resistor values chosen such that 16-volt maximum phase voltage corresponds 3.3-volt maximum input. zero crossing signal obtained comparing motor phase voltage with value motor voltage. Comparator U201A performs this function, producing zero crossing signal, Zero_cross_C.
