LM117/LM317A/LM317 3-Terminal Adjustable Regulator
LM117 series adjustable 3-terminal positive voltage regulators capable supplying excess 1.5A over 1.2V output range. They exceptionally easy require only external resistors output voltage. Further, both line load regulation better than standard fixed regulators. Also, LM117 packaged standard transistor packages which easily mounted handled. addition higher performance than fixed regulators, LM117 series offers full overload protection available only IC's. Included chip current limit, thermal overload protection safe area protection. overload protection circuitry remains fully functional even adjustment terminal disconnected. Normally, capacitors needed unless device situated more than inches from input filter capacitors which case input bypass needed. optional output capacitor added improve transient response. adjustment terminal bypassed achieve very high ripple rejection ratios which difficult achieve with standard 3-terminal regulators. Besides replacing fixed regulators, LM117 useful wide variety other applications. Since regulator "floating" sees only input-to-output differential voltage, supplies several hundred volts regulated long maximum input output differential exceeded, i.e., avoid short-circuiting output. Also, makes especially simple adjustable switching regulator, programmable output regulator, connecting fixed resistor between adjustment output, LM117 used precision current regulator. operation, LM117 develops nominal 1.25V reference voltage, VREF, between output adjustment terminal. reference voltage impressed across program resistor and, since voltage constant, constant current then flows through output resistor giving output voltage
