Description
FAN4603 fully integrated synchronous DC/DC buck converter that provides 600mA output current over input voltage ranging from 2.3V 5.5V. provides fixed output voltage level ranging from 1.0V 1.8V. Other voltage options available request. FAN4603 converter offered ultra-miniature "Solder Play" solution that requires external components able achieve accuracy output ripple less than 12mV. Total footprint 2.5mm with maximum height 1.1mm. used small battery-powered devices applications with distributed requirements. moderate light loads, pulse frequency modulation used operate device power-save mode with typical quiescent current 35µA. Even with such quiescent current, part exhibits excellent transient response during large load swings. higher loads, system automatically switches fixed-frequency control. shutdown mode, supply current drops below 2µA, reducing power consumption.

Operation Description
FAN4603 600mA, step-down, switching-voltage regulator that delivers fixed output from input voltage supply 2.3V 5.5V. Using proprietary architecture with synchronous rectification, FAN4603 capable delivering peak efficiency >90%, while maintaining efficiency over load currents 1mA. regulator operates nominal frequency 6MHz. prevent shutdown during soft-start, following condition must met:

Control Scheme
FAN4603 uses proprietary, non-linear, fixed-frequency modulator deliver fast load transient response, while maintaining constant switching frequency over wide range operating conditions. Regulator stability dependent output capacitor ESR, which allows ceramic capacitors. Although this type operation normally results switching frequency that varies with input voltage load current, internal frequency loop holds switching frequency constant over large range input voltages load currents. very light loads, FAN4603 incorporates discontinuous current (DCM) single-pulse mode, which produces lower output ripple when compared with other architectures. Transition between seamless, with glitch less than 20mV VOUT during transition between modes. Combined with exceptional transient response characteristics, very quiescent current controller (35µA) maintains high efficiency; even very light loads, while preserving fast transient response applications requiring tight output regulation.

Multiple soft-start cycles required COUT>10f (15f with load). shuts down when IDISP+ ILOAD exceeds ILIMIT more than current limit. then begins soft-start cycle. Subsequent soft-start cycles begin with charge retained COUT while off, allowing VOUT incrementally reach regulation over multiple soft-start attempts.
Current Limit, Fault Shutdown, Restart
heavy load short circuit output causes current increase until maximum current threshold reached. Upon reaching this point, high-side switch turns off, preventing high currents from causing damage. regulator continues limit current cycle-by-cycle. After 21µs current limit, regulator triggers over-current fault, causing regulator shut down about before attempting automatic restart. fault caused short circuit, soft-start circuit attempts restart produces over-current fault after about 32s, which results duty cycle less than 30%, limiting power dissipation.
Enable Soft-Start
When LOW, circuits FAN4603 draws ~100nA current. When HIGH above UVLO threshold, regulator begins soft-start cycle. output ramp during soft-start fixed slew rate 50mV/s from VOUT, then 12.5mV/s until output reaches setpoint. mode operation prohibited during soft-start cycle prevent COUT from being discharged. This allows glitchless starting into pre-charged output.
Under-Voltage Lockout (UVLO)
When HIGH, under-voltage lockout keeps part from operating until input supply voltage rises high enough properly operate. This ensures misbehavior regulator during startup shutdown.
Startup into Large COUT

Thermal Shutdown
When temperature increases, high load condition and/or high ambient temperature, output switching disabled until temperature fallen sufficiently. junction temperature which thermal shutdown activates nominally 150°C with 15°C hysteresis. After cooling, automatically restarts, with soft-start cycle.

Reducing Output Ripple
output ripple amplitude reduced adding external COUT, with negligible impact efficiency. Reduced output ripple also results less voltage excursion very light loads. Maximum ripple occurs load VOUT proportional.
