Description
This highly integrated controller provides several features enhance performance low-power flyback converters. minimize standby power consumption, proprietary green-mode function provides off-time modulation linearly decrease switching frequency under light-load zero-load conditions. This green mode enables power supply meet international power conservation requirements. Another advantage FAN400C that typical startup current only while typical operating current 3.6mA. large startup resistance used achieve higher power conversion efficiency. FAN400C integrates frequency-hopping function internally reduce emissions with minimum line filters. Built-in synchronized slope compensation maintains stability peak current-mode control. Proprietary internal compensation ensures constant output power limiting over universal range input voltages, from 90VAC 264VAC. FAN400C provides many protection functions. Pulse-by-pulse current limiting ensures constant output current, even short circuit occurs. internal protection circuit disables output exceeds 24.5V. gate output clamped protect power from over-voltage damage. built-in over-temperature protection (OTP) function shuts down controller 140°C with 30°C hysteresis. FAN400C designed provide low-cost total solution flyback converters. available small footprint, 6-pin, SSOT-6 8-pin packages.

Operation Description
FAN400C devices integrate many useful functions low-power switch-mode power supplies. following descriptions highlight features FAN400C.
Oscillator Operation
oscillation frequency fixed 65KHz.
Startup Current
required startup current only 8mA, which allows high-resistance, low-wattage startup resistor supply controller's startup power. 1.5M/0.25W startup resistor used over wide input range (100V240VAC) with very little power loss.
Leading-Edge Blanking (LEB)
Each time power MOSFET switched turn-on spike occurs sense-resistor. avoid premature termination switching pulse, 310ns leadingedge blanking time built Conventional filtering necessary. During this blanking period, current-limit comparator disabled cannot switch gate drive.
Operating Current
operating current normally 3.6mA, which results higher efficiency reduces required holdup capacitance. 10F/25V hold-up capacitor used over wide input range (100V-240VAC) with very little power loss.
Constant Output Power Limit
When SENSE voltage across sense resistor reaches threshold voltage (around 1.0V), output GATE drive turned following small propagation delay, tPD. This propagation delay introduces additional current proportional propagation delay nearly constant regardless input line voltage VIN. Higher input line voltages result larger additional currents. Under high input-line voltages, output power limit higher than under input-line voltages. Over wide range input voltages, variation significant. compensate this, threshold voltage adjusted adding positive ramp (Vlimit_ramp). This ramp signal vary from 0.73V 1.01V flattens 1.01V. smaller threshold voltage forces output GATE drive terminate earlier, reducing total turn-on time making output power equal that low-line input. This proprietary internal compensation feature ensures constant output power limit over wide range input voltages (90VAC 264VAC).
Green-Mode Operation
proprietary green-mode function provides off-time modulation linearly decrease switching frequency under light-load zero-load conditions. on-time limited provide better protection against brownouts other abnormal conditions. Power supplies using FAN400C meet international restrictions regarding standby power-consumption.
Current (CC) without Feedback
FAN400C provide over-current protection without requiring secondary-side feedback signals. improved accuracy, transformer leakage inductance should reduced much possible.
Over-Temperature Protection (OTP)
FAN400C built-in temperature-sensing circuit shut down output once junction temperature exceeds 140°C. While output shut down, voltage gradually drops UVLO voltage. Some internal circuits shut down gradually starts increasing again. When reaches 17V, internal circuits, including temperature-sensing circuit, operate normally. junction temperature still higher than 140°C, controller shuts down immediately. This situation continues until temperature drops below 110°C. output then turned back temperature hysteresis window circuit 30°C.
Under-Voltage Lockout (UVLO)
turn-on/turn-off thresholds fixed internally enable FAN400C during startup, hold-up capacitor must first charged through startup resistor. hold-up capacitor continues supply before energy delivered from auxiliary winding main transformer. must drop below during this startup process. This UVLO hysteresis window ensures that hold-up capacitor adequately supply during startup.
Gate Output
BiCMOS output stage fast totem-pole gate driver. Cross-conduction avoided minimize heat dissipation, increase efficiency, enhance reliability. output driver clamped internal Zener diode protect power MOSFET transistors against harmful over-voltage gate signals.
Over-Voltage Clamping
over-voltage clamping prevents damage from overvoltage conditions. When exceeds 24.5V, output shut down. Over-voltage conditions caused open photo-coupler loop short circuit output.

Slope Compensation
sensed voltage across current-sense resistor used current-mode control pulse-by-pulse current limiting. built-in slope compensation improves power supply stability. Furthermore, prevents sub-harmonic oscillations that normally would occur because peak-current mode control. positively sloped, synchronized ramp activated with every switching cycle. slope ramp 0.33 Duty Duty (max.)
Noise Immunity
Noise from current-sense control signal cause significant pulse-width jitter, particularly continuous-conduction mode. Slope compensation helps alleviate this problem. Good placement layout practices should followed. Avoid long traces component leads. Compensation filter components should located near FAN400C. Increasing power-MOS gate resistance advised.
