AP2161D AP2171D integrated high-side power switches optimized Universal Serial (USB) that requires protection functions. power switches equipped with driver that controls gate voltage incorporates slew-rate limitation. This, along with various protection features special functions, makes these power switches ideal hot-swap hot-plug applications.
Protection Features: Under-voltage Lockout (UVLO)
Under-voltage lockout function (UVLO) guarantees that internal power switch initially during start-up. UVLO functions only when switch enabled. Even switch enabled, switch turned until power supply reached least 1.9V. Whenever input voltage falls below approximately 1.9V, power switch turned off. This facilitates design hot-insertion systems where possible turn power switch before input power removed.

Over-current Short Circuit Protection
internal sensing employed check over-current conditions. Unlike current-sense resistors, sense FETs increase series resistance current path. When over-current condition detected, device maintains constant output current reduces output voltage accordingly. Thermal Protection
Thermal protection prevents from damage when temperature exceeds safe margins. This mainly occurs when heavy-overload short-circuit faults present extended periods time. AP2161D/AP2171D implements thermal sensing monitor operating junction temperature power distribution switch. Once temperature rises approximately 140°C, Thermal protection feature gets activated follows: internal thermal sense circuitry turns power switch output asserted thus preventing power switch from damage. Hysteresis thermal sense circuit allows device cool down approximately 25°C before output turned back This built-in thermal hysteresis feature excellent feature, avoids undesirable oscillations thermal protection circuit. switch continues cycle this manner until load fault removed, resulting pulsed output. open-drain output asserted when over-current occurs with 7-ms deglitch.

Reverse Current Protection
normal MOSFET switch, current flow reverse direction (from output side input side) when output side voltage higher than input side, even when switch turned off. reverse-current blocking feature implemented AP21x1 series prevent such back currents. This circuit activated difference between output voltage input voltage. When switch disabled, this feature blocks reverse current flow from output back input.
Special Functions: Discharge Function
When enable de-asserted, discharge function active. output capacitor discharged through internal NMOS that discharge resistance 100. Hence, output voltage drops down zero. time taken discharge dependent time constant resistance output capacitor.
Response

Applications Information: Power Supply Considerations
0.01-F 0.1-F ceramic bypass capacitor between GND, close device, recommended. This limits input voltage drop during line transients. Placing high-value electrolytic capacitor input (10-F minimum) output pin(s) recommended when output load heavy. This precaution also reduces power-supply transients that cause ringing input. Additionally, bypassing output with 0.01-F 0.1-F ceramic capacitor improves immunity device short-circuit transients. This capacitor also prevents output from going negative during turn-off inductive parasitics.
